5 Tips for dealing with Hyperpigmentation

By September 4, 2019No Comments

Don’t we all admire and wish for an even tone and blemish-free skin?
Of course, we do!
But our genetic combinations, our lifestyle, and the drastically escalating pollution are responsible for and leaves a profound impact on how our skin looks and feels. Most of us at one point of our lives have suffered at the hands of one of the many skin conditions such as acne, excessively oily skin growing up, but while certain skin troubles subsidize with time, what about those that stay and aggravate further such as hyperpigmentation.
Our skin gets its color from the production of melanin, which results in fair or dark complexion. Several factors affect the production of melanin in our body. When the production of the melanin goes into overdrive, spots and patches of relatively darker color start appearing on the skin, covering specific areas. This is hyperpigmentation; which although a harmless condition is one of the significant causes of low self-esteem, because of how apparent they are, especially on the face, and hands.

Causes:

Aside from excess melanin, there are other reasons which lead to sudden surfacing and spreading of hyperpigmentation, such as :

  • Medications
  • Hormonal changes
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Endocrine disease

Types:

Patches or spots of hyperpigmentation surface differently on different people.
Some might have melasma, which is caused due to hormonal changes and spread mainly on the abdomen and face.
When skin is exposed to excessive sunlight for prolonged hours, faded brown spots of hyperpigmentation are visible in the exposed area. Also called the sunspots, liver spots, or solar lentigines, they are prominent on face and hands.
Then there is post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is a result of picking on breakouts or injuries that leave scars.

Remedies:

Starting from the basics- using topical solutions. But not only do they take an excessively long time to deliver results, but their effectiveness is also dubious.
Many would advise you to try a hydroquinone based prescription treatments, considering it is hailed as a potent skin bleaching agent, being used for decades to get rid of the spot. But if used in more than the permitted concentration and for a prolonged period, hydroquinone can aggravate a deeper pigmentation
You can always try concealing with make-up, but the chemical compounds in make-up (not to forget some also use metal particles in it) worsen the hyperpigmentation, leaving you with even more damaged skin. Also, not all make-up adequately conceal the spots or successfully give an even tone unless you sit down and waste hours applying it, but who has the time?
We bring to you, five skincare tips, which is included in your routine would help treat and conceal those stubborn patches so that you no longer have to be the self-conscious one in the group:

Regular Moisturization:

REGULAR MOISTURIZATION
Use retinol, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid-based moisturizer regularly. These ingredients are active in addressing and brightening the affected area effectively. Not only will you see a gradual reduction in spots, but it will also boost the cells turnover, thereby making the skin more smooth.

Do Not Over Exfoliate:

over-exfoliation
Exfoliation is necessary to get rid of dead skin, but over-exfoliation especially those with chemical peels, facial scrubs, microdermabrasion or cleansing brushes can rip the natural oil from the top layer of the skin and lead to post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Stop Picking:

No matter the severity of the itchiness, do not pick on any acne or try to squeeze out a blackhead, as this will aggravate the inflammation leading to skin discoloration, thereby leading to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Picking blemishes and scabs lead to brown pigmentation patches which aren’t evident for a long time but damages the skin.

Use Sun-Block:

You might be tempted to skip the sunscreen, on a windy day, but that negligence is making your skin susceptible to getting internally damaged by harmful UV rays.  You must use sunscreen religiously to mitigate the possibility of skin discoloration and brown spots unless you prefer walking on streets like Dr. Ross Gellar.
